First of the Season – Watermelon

In case you couldn’t tell by the sweltering temperatures – Summer is finally upon us! And here to satisfy our palates while wetting our parched throats is a delectable summertime classic – First of the Season Watermelon!

Made of nearly 90% water, Watermelon’s are definitely a must have for hot summer days. Their green and white rind, along with their familiar magenta to red colored flesh has become an icon  synonymous with warm summer days spent pool side. And when you combine its water dense flesh with incredible succulence and sweet flavoring it’s no wonder Watermelon is a go-to favorite.

Our Seedless Watermelon has none of the larger black seeds found in traditional Watermelon (but does contain the small white seeds, which are completely edible). In addition to fresh eating,  Watermelon is also great for juicing and smoothies (again think of all that delicious hydration) – plus Watermelon can also be made into Preserves and Jams, and the rind can even be pickled! Be sure and check out our Natural Gatorade Recipe below, which can also star this Summertime favorite.

Melon Nutrition – Sharing many nutritional similarities with its gourd cousins Squash, the Melon combines the high water and low calorie content of the summer squash, with the high nutrient content of the winter varieties, including high values of Vitamins B and C, Potassium, and soluble Pectin Fiber. So during these especially hot and dry summer months, there’s nothing better to take a refreshing and cooling bite out of.

First of the Season – White Corn is Here!!

FIRST OF THE SEASON & SUMMERTIME FAVORITE – WHITE CORN IS HERE!

One of our favorite Sweet Corn varieties, White Corn (dubbed so for its creamy white colored kernels) features a high water to sugar ratio when at its freshest, resulting in the most succulent, tender, and sweetest of Kernels – and absolutely perfect for grilling season!

A good thing to remember when it comes to cooking your White Corn is that the less your white corn is cooked, the better the texture and flavor will remain. And while it is great roasted, blanched, or steamed – we highly recommend you grill it! White Corn’s bright and sweet flavors also make it a great ingredient for your favorite summer salad or pasta.

And while Corn may have a rep as a plain yet tasty staple – it also plays host to some surprising nutrients. Besides being a great source of Fiber, Corn is actually a phytonutrient-rich food – providing you with great anti-oxidant benefits (as well as containing significant amounts of Vitamins B, Folic Acid, and Protein content).

Looking for a new way to try your grilled corn this weekend? Try it Mexican Style!

Plus make sure and check out one of our favorite Recipes from our very own Chef Stuart: Grilled Corn Summer Salad – featuring a slew of fresh and delicious summertime produce all available at the Market this Season.
